5 Holy Grail Skincare Products For Oily/Problem Skin
I have had very oily problem skin for as long as I can remember and in my late 20’s I (very suddenly) developed acne! I put it down to the the drastic climate change, returning to freezing blighty after being in the sun for 11 months while working on a cruise ship, but as my skin got worse I knew it was simply my hormones.
This sudden acne flare up ruled my life at the time and I was determined to get rid of it come hell or high water! It was making me paranoid to the point I didn’t want to go to work. I tried every lotion, potion and acne treatment you can think of from weekly microdermabrasions, potent spot creams, Proactiv regimine, intense face peels, stupidly expensive face creams…. the list goes on. The only thing that seemed to help my skin at that time when all else failed was high doses of pantothenic acid supplement and a very basic (and inexpensive) simple skincare regime.
Now I’m in my 30’s, apart from the odd spot here and there, I’m happy to say my skin is pretty clear. I do get occasional flare ups and my skin can become very sensitive as I occasionally use retinol products in winter, although using the products below, unless I’m going out to meet the girls for lunch, go on a date or a night out, I feel completely comfortable and confident going without make up.
I have tried and tested so many skin care products from high end fad to basic and inexpensive, but my holy grail staple items that live on my shelf at home are as follows:
1. Dermalogica Barrier Repair
Dermalogica Barrier Repair is my go-to skincare product when my skin is temperamental and acts up. The texture is silky smooth and goes on so beautifully. It reminds me a lot of Smashbox Photo Finish make up primer. It glides on and make up looks flawless over the top of this.
It’s great for sensitive skin or skin that has become sensitized. It literally melts into the skin and feels soothing and calming, particularly after a day in the sun.
2. Dr Organic Snail Gel
Now don’t freak out, but this Dr Organic Snail Gel (serum) is literally made out of snails secretions! 8-O. Before I go on about how fab this product is though, I want to make clear that no snails are harmed whilst making this product! According to Dr. Organic: “The snail mucus secretion is collected from glass panes that the snails are able to roam freely and travel over. The secretion is collected, filtered and then concentrated by vacuum evaporation to reduce its water content before a mild preservative is added to maintain its shelf life”. I’m comfortable with that.
Now although you may squirm at the thought of putting snail secretions on your face, according to Dr Organic: “Laboratory analysis found that the secretions contained high levels of naturally occurring allantoin, collagen, elastin and anti-bacterial substances that all have beneficial healing, smoothing and purifying effects on human skin”.
The gel is very light and is to be used as a serum for underneath your regular moisturiser as it’s probably too light for most people to use on its own without a moisturiser. It feels refreshing and has a pleasant smell. It is packed full of bioactive ingredients and includes Aloe Vera, Glycolic Acid, Collagen, Elastin, Allantoin, Vitamins and Minerals. It claims to assist in healing the skin which I support. This product instantly calms my face down after an invasive skin treatment such as a face peel or microneedling.
3. Olay Regenerist 3 Point Super Firming Serum
Olay Regenerist is from the Olay anti-ageing range and aimed at women from ages 30 up.
The Olay Regenerist 3 Point Super Firming Serum is one of Olay’s best selling products with many rave reviews and I know why!
This is a serum which can be used either underneath your regular face moisturiser or on its own. As my skin is oily I can use this on its own and put make up right on top and am ready to go. I even use this around my eyes as an eye serum with no irritation (and my eyes are sensitive).
The texture of this serum is amazing. It is silky smooth and glides on effortlessly. It gives a slight dewy look to the skin and I find it hydrating and the smell is incredible! I love to use this particularly in summer, on its own and under make up for a flawless finish. My face feels like a baby’s bum after applying this with no irritation even if I have an acne flare up.
4. Dr Organic Manuka Honey Scrub Nourish & Restore
Dr. Organic Manuka Honey Scrub Nourish & Restore is my favourite face exfoliating scrub ever!
Most face scrubs I’ve tried in the past are way too gentle, almost feeling as though I’m not even exfoliating at all! The Dr Organic Manuka Honey Scrub has good size exfoliating grains and not only does my skin feel super clean after using this product, but also feels incredibly soft and nourished thanks to the manuka honey.
My former go-to face scrub was the St Ives Apricot Face Scrub but compared to the Dr Organic Manuka Honey Scrub, it’s way too harsh and aggressive on the skin. I get the same effective exfoliation with Dr Organic as I do with St Ives, however, with Dr Organic my skin feels much softer and hydrated afterwards.
5. Re-Gen Cream
This Re-Gen Cream is the most inexpensive product of all listed here but definitely on-par with all of the above.
If you have acne scars, hyperpigmentation or any marks on the skin (on any part of the body) this cream is for you!
I have some marks on my face left behind from spots I’ve squeezed (slap my bottom!) but after 2-3 weeks of using the Re-Gen Cream, I definitely noticed fading in the marks on my face. I use this as a face moisturiser more in winter as it’s slightly too heavy for summer months, although I find it light enough to wear underneath make up. I also use it after a mild skin procedure such as a light face peel or microneedling when my skin isn’t too sensitised.
Re-Gen Cream is effective on scars, acne marks, pigmentation and even stretch marks. It’s also cheap enough to use on problem body areas.
I have a LOT of skincare products scattered around my bathroom (above are only a few shelves) but the items listed here are my staple go-to products that have helped heal, calm and save my skin over the years. I hope you try one or two and that they help your skin as they still continue to help mine. Let me know how you get on or if you try any out. Would love to hear from you!
Have you tried any of the products above? What’s your holy grail skincare item ~ even if its not listed above?
