Cliveden House ~ My Weekend At This Cosy English Winter Retreat
Crisp Air, Red Wine, Roaring Fireplaces ~ Cliveden House is Like a Big Hug
As soon as the car tyres crunched into the driveway gravel leading up to to the grounds of Cliveden House, I felt butterflies in my tummy! I knew I was in for something truly special and I wasn’t wrong. Cliveden House is set in the beautiful English countryside in Berkshire and is surrounded by 376 acres of stunning National Trust listed gardens. The surroundings of Cliveden House are like something from a fairytale. The views over the River Thames and onsite parklands are incredible. It’s no wonder this is one of the finest luxury hotels in the UK.
Stepping Inside This Grand Stately Home
Once you step inside this huge gem of a house it’s just like stepping back in time. Everything about this place screams grandeur, elegance, luxury and sophistication. All boxes ticked for me!
I’m an old soul who appreciates anything traditional and will always and forever opt for traditional over modern and contemporary any day of the week! Cliveden House is probably one of the most classically traditional hotels I’ve ever stayed in (and I’ve stayed in a few). In my humble opinion, Cliveden House trumps Claridges and Dorchester in London hands down!
The main lounging area has plenty of soft comfortable cosy chairs that you sink into and lose yourself in. There is a roaring fireplace at the far end of the lounge which I was sat beside every single evening with Pinot Noir (or Port) in hand. I went in the winter time so this cosy warm set up was sheer bliss!
Service is impeccable and waiters are very friendly.
Reception area is situated at a large mahogany desk next to the main entrance
Bubbles and cakes after a day clay pigeon shooting ~ would be rude not to indulge in some high tea!
Our beautiful suite! I would have been quite happy to stay in this room for the entire duration of my stay!
Annie Tyra Get Yer Gun!
So, my friend thought it would be exciting for us to try some clay pigeon shooting. I have never even seen a gun in real life before so the thought of handling a huge rifle… well… excited me no end! (Despite appearances, I am a thrill seeker! Give me a scary ride or a sky-diving opportunity and I’m all over it!)
The gun club we went to was called EJ Churchill in High Wycombe. We had a lesson for approximately one hour and was taught to hit clay targets that sprang out from nowhere, such as behind the trees and up from the ground! I actually did pretty well considering (although I am very competitive hehe!) Had a fun day and was really good fun! Although in hindsight, I probably shouldn’t have drank quite so much wine the night before! (Smack bum!)….
Pavilion Spa Onsite With Outdoor Pool
There is a spa on the grounds of the hotel, although not in the main building. It is located just a stones throw away in a smaller building to the side. There are many facilities although I didn’t get a chance to use the spa on that occasion 🙁 However, I plan to head back later this year where I will be sure to indulge in a few hours of pampering!
The spa is also available to non residents of the hotel and day packages as well as half day packages can be booked at quite reasonable prices here on the Cliveden House website.
Facilities as mentioned on the website are:
- Heated Outdoor Pool
- Outdoor Canadian hot tubs
- Whirlpool spas
- Indoor Swimming Pool
- 6 Treatment Rooms
- Fully equipped Gymnasium (featuring state of the TechnoGym equipment including the a Plurima and Powerplate)
- Separate Men’s and Ladies’ Steam Rooms and Sauna.
- The Walled Garden is a secluded sun trap, with an array of sunbeds next to the pool.
In addition guests are also able to enjoy:
- 376 Acres of spectacular National Trust Managed Gardens (including Jogging and Walking trails)
- Tennis Courts (indoor and outdoors)
- The Cliveden Flotilla of Vintage Launches (available April to October)
Cliveden House really is a special place to stay (or just visit). They have the most wonderful high tea which is very popular and is great for a mothers day gift or a get together with the girls. The spa offers some great facilities for couples, friends or as a gift package and of course the hotel grounds are quite spectacular! I will be going back again later this winter and I can’t wait!!
